Required tools / materials

  • Chinese White, Small Cake

  • Heat source (e.g. gentle flame, soldering iron tip, hot plate) to melt or warm the Chinese White so it becomes dab-able or brushable.

  • Small brush or applicator (or a tool for dabbing)

  • Surface to prepare (metal workpiece or similar)

  • Pencil or other marking implement after application

Usage instructions

  1. Warm or melt the Chinese White cake
Heat gently until it becomes soft enough that it can be dabbed or brushed onto the metal surface. Too much heat should be avoided; the goal is to make it workable

  2. Apply to the surface
Using a small brush or dabbing tool, apply the softened Chinese White onto the metal where you want to make markings. Spread or dab a thin, even layer

  3. Make your pencil (or other) marks
Once the Chinese White is applied and while it is still workable or just set enough, use a pencil to draw your design or guideline. The applied white allows the pencil mark to leave a visible impression

  4. Proceed with further work (engraving, cutting, etc.)
With the guidelines or markings made, you can use them as a guide for engraving, cutting, or other metalwork you are performing.

  5. Removal (if needed)
After you have finished or once the work can proceed without further need of the marking layer, the Chinese White can be scraped, wiped off, or it may wear away during processing. (The manufacturer does not specify elaborate removal instructions; likely simple mechanical removal is sufficient.)
